Fall Off (the wagon) Fridays with this Chicago Style Italian Grinder

Fall Off (the wagon) Fridays with this Chicago Style Italian Grinder, seriously I CRASHED off the wagon on Thursday after I made it!!! While I sought out for the correct term that would be suiting for this sandwich, I came across some interesting information AND The History Lover/Teacher in me found it quite intriguing and I thought I would share! Did you know that the Italian Sandwich originated in several different Italian American communities in the Northeastern United States? Portland, Maine claims to be the birthplace of this sandwich, but it also has origins from many Northeastern states,  including Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, NY, NJ, Mass, and RI. One theory about the “Grinder” is that it came from Italian-American slang dock workers, among whom the sandwich was very popular. In Pennsylvania, NY, and Delaware and other parts of New England, the term “Grinder” usually refers to a hot submarine sandwich BUT has many names AKA a Sub(named after a submarine, believed to be started by an immigrant Italian man in New Jersey),  a Wedge (NY &Conn), Spukie (Boston), Blimpie (New Jersey), Po’boy (Louisiana), Zepplelin or Zep (Eastern Penn.), Hero or Heros (NY), and Hoagie (Philladephia, PA). Anyway you want to call it, there is one thing I CAN promise you, if you love Italian sandwiches, you will greatly enjoy this Chicago Style Italian Grinder whether it be tonight, tomorrow, or for the Chicago Bears game Sunday night, Go Bears!!!….Cheers to a long and happy weekend leading into a Holiday week…Enjoy!!!
